Because I should be translating Pliny....

From Sunday to Sunday:

Sunday - Diner with Mario and his fiance. Cale & Sausage soup and rustic bread. Yummm.

Monday - McCain/ Palin Rally. Up at 4:30 am. Rushed out the door. Nearly forgot a jacket (which turned out to be of little warmth anyhow... :). We arrived at the SkySox Stadium very early. It was ~chilly, still the rally was amazing. Our seats were excellently situated a few rows back from the field.

Tuesday - Study, paper writing, sleeping, etc.

Wednesday - Work at Serranos Coffee Company (my new employer). Got into a conversation with a customer whose little daughter will be in an opera. I looked at the girl.... adorable and still in her school uniform. Would she become the next Adelina Patti?

Thursday - Work, school...see Tuesday.

Friday - Company for diner.

Saturday - Rest, a friend's birthday bash, and thence to see Biloxi Blues at the Fine Arts Center. So excited!

Sunday - Study, study, midterm, study, study. lol.

This quote of the day made me smile:

The whole world is in revolt. Soon there will be only five Kings left--the King of England, the King of Spades, The King of Clubs, the King of Hearts, and the King of Diamonds. - King Farouk of Egypt, 1948

Cheers!

"Here was this man, unable as a clerk in Holy Orders to use any of the words which would have been at the disposal of a layman, and yet by sheer force of character rising triumphantly over the handicap. Without saying a thing that couldn't have been said in the strictest drawing room, the Rev. Aubrey Upjohn contrived to produce in Freddie the illusion that he had had a falling out with the bucko mate of a tramp steamer." - Bramley is So Bracing

On summer: it is especially cathartic to step back and reconsider ALL preconceived plans you've been making since you were a dewey eyed eleven year old. Early July I made a bold move and decided not return to PHC this fall. I'll return next fall or spring and still be on par with credit hours. The factors around this decision are many. I am blessed to be at home... and, thankfully, not starved for school altogether: while working, I'm taking online courses and mentoring high school writers... Six mentees total! Thoroughly enjoyable. The constant on-the-go of home life is keeping me busy. I'm currently employed at Kohls, but that will soon change as I've almost fulfilled my due notice. I've had a couple interviews at other places and hope to hear back from them this week. Keep your fingers crossed!

In the meantime: my dream of traveling with the C.S. Lewis Foundation has come true! Elizabeth will be at the Kilns this summer for a week long seminar. Imagine studying in Lewis's own home. Participants will live at the Kilns, listen to lectures during the day, and get to visit the local haunts. So sumptuously happy about it all! Also, I'm beginning vocal training with a wonderful coach I met last year. I'm hoping this will prepare me to audition for a production in the spring. But even if the audition isn't a go, I've always wanted to continue with voice training... it's one of those accomplishments I would love to have... since natural knowledge is more than lacking in that area.

I'm scheming to tour Europe this summer either before or after the Lewis seminar (one reason for being at home to work). It seems silly to not stay an extra week or so if I can. Just need to settle on where to stay...

ViennaCourtOpera1902
Vienna? Hmmm.

The King's College in New York City offers a "semester in the city program," which is something I'm considering for fall term. The program sounds wonderful and allows students to attend during any class year. If I do wind up in the Big Apple, which would be another dream come true, PHC will see me Spring 2009.

Well, relatives are visiting and I think we're having an early breakfast... any remaining thoughts will require sleep in order to be extracted.

Ciao and love!

This is a beautiful song  from the Ten Tenors.  Have a very happy 4th! And let's remember our heros.

I ADORE the radio.  It's history, the fuzzy sound of a bad signal. I even enjoy radio commercials... at least most of them... I do appreciate clever advertisement.  Being a sucker for old radio jingles. lol

The radio is one remnant of an incredible but waning era.   Radio is, or was rather, like a vaudeville theatre for the mind.  Though sadly garbage has littered radio waves, quality listening still exists. You can still find intelligent political analysts (right? right ;), radio theatre, hilarious weekend nut cases, and special entertainment programing on today's channels.  It just takes some diligent searching; I highly recommend Google--the world's new everything.

But come dimpsey forecast or taboo-breaking news, my favorite channels will always remain those in vintage format...  I find them completely intriguing. My portals to the past.

---

A fun thing to do on those treat-myself-nights is to have a delicious drink in hand and listen to my cathedral radio, while puttering on some project.

Little gems I've discovered over the years:

Digital Deli -  I can spend hours browsing this spot.  It has soooo much information about the Golden Age of Radio.  You can watch film and advertisement clips or listen to seasonal radio shows.  If you're fan of vintage sounds or a history nut, I guarantee you'll enjoy your time here.

This free site offers hundreds of vintage radio shows.

My plug for a few stations.  While in Colorado, I always fluctuate among them.

KCMN (1530 AM) - a radio station broadcasting a Nostalgia format.  It includes legends from the 30s through now, a Frank Sinatra hour, and a day-time host who's a hoot.

KCME (88.7 FM) - a classical music radio station... "A Voice for the Arts."  Classical music, Afternoons at the Opera, Jazz mornings.

KEZW (1430 AM) - a station that plays timeless oldies and Broadway. Every Sunday from noon-2pm is the show "Broadway's Biggest Hits"--a newly discovered favorite.
